I just finished to write a pattern for basic slippers and matching leg warmers. It means that in one pattern you have two patterns! :-) You can make them separate, but I think it will be much better to make them both. I used merino wool and silk mixed yarn and they came out so cozy, so warm that I am not taking them off while I am at home. Pattern is very easy and will perfect even for beginner!
